This year (2015) Reece Mastin kicked off with his single and title track of his EP, ‘Rebel and the Reason’.
The EP was "set to reveal an edgier, rock-laden new sound. It was lying dormant in Reece all along, and the anticipation he feels in unleashing this new music is matched only by the expectation in ardent fans."
Reece enlisted producers Jean-Paul Fung (who co-wrote ‘Rebel’) and Ben Rodgers, who has worked with Reece for years. “Ben has walked my journey with me musically. I knew I wanted him to steer the ship on the record. He really caught the live, living and breathing side of the record and still brought in the modern edge that really makes it pop out” commented Reece.
The result: take a listen to the opening track ‘Rebel and the Reason’. Mixed by Justin Stanley, who has worked with Eric Clapton, Beck and “artists I really respect”, Reece adds; “We had a bunch of killer musos play on the EP. It was a really special experience for me and getting to be this hands on with this record was incredible.” Reece adds; “Guitars have always been the instrument of choice. I think we’ve used them in the perfect way for this record. You can’t do rock without them, so expect more guitars!”
We recently had the chance to ask Reece some questions. Find out what he had to say below....
1. Tell us a little bit about the inspiration behind your latest release?
This record was really important for me as theres been a lot of change. The album is more rock and put down with a live band that were amazing to watch and work with. I definitely feel like this is where I feel most comfatable and I’ve always loved real rock music.
2. What is different about these track from your previous releases?
I was more truthful to myself in the way I wanted to approach this record and I think lyrically its a lot more honest and things that I feel more strongly about and I think overall it feels free and like IT has a breathe to it and theres guitars lots of guitars haha
3. Where do you draw inspiration from when writing music?
Anywhere I can, I like to sing a melody first then get a feel for the emotion of the song then draw from that.
4. Can you describe each track on the EP in a few words?
Rebel and the Reason - Rebel is about going through a struggle and adversity. Trying to hold on to your innocence and be true to yourself, and having the courage to make a change
Keep on Walking - Is about pick yourself up of the floor, no matter how hard it gets. getting up and walking through any wall give it to me straight- I’m a very down to the point person and this song is about looking out for those that aren’t, and have something to hide.
Nr2die- music is something i intend and want to do for the rest of my life and this song is about that. what ever happens i won’t stop doing what i love.
Sleep when your dead-…..sex, i don’t know how else to explain it haha
5. Which is your personal favourite track on the EP?
I think rebel would be my favourite especially when we did the clip along side it. I think I can really help some people.
6. Your process in creating a track?
It can start with a guitar riff, some piano, badly played if its coming from me I might add haha or just a lyric, I like it to come to me in the most natural, unforced way possible.
7. Your favourite piece of music equipment/technology to use...
Just a guitar.
8. One thing that you have not done but would like to...
I haven’t played wembly arena yet so that would nice haha
9. If you could claim any album as your own whose would it be and why?
Probably aerosmiths pump album.
10. Something your fans may not know about you, maybe a hidden talent?
They almost know everything about me I think, there was a rumour that I had taken 7 years of tap dancing lessons but unfortunately thats not true haha
11. If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
I'd love to sing with steve tyler or play with chris cornell but id also like to something with some like eminem i think that rap rock crossovers are a cool vibe.
12. What can you tell us about what you have planned for 2015?
I’m recording the album soon I’ve gotten a bunch of songs here with cool people and artist and I’ve just come back from writing in the states so I’m looking forward to getting in the studio again. thats all in the middle of the tour we have coming in june its gonna be awesome to get back out there and see all the fans again. pretty much just writing, playing and realising music and i couldn’t be happier :)
