What is the inspiration behind your latest/ upcoming EP...
This record for me is about being bold, honest & raw in all that you do. Whether that is love, fighting the good fight, your passions, your desires… We’re nothing if not honest.
How would you describe your current sound?
I have a deep love of so many musical genres, that I’d describe my music as a bit of a melting pot of everything. Pop, rock, indie, singer/songwriter. I’ve always felt like boxing yourself into a genre can be a bit of a creativity killer, so I’ve tried to stay open to many sonic elements. It really depended on what the songs needed to bring them to life.
Something your fans may not know about you, maybe a hidden talent?
I can fold and flatten my tongue on itself. It’s not the most glamorous of faces, but I’d say it’s a pretty hidden ‘talent’.
If you could claim anyones album as your own who’s would it be any why?
REALLY tough question! It would definitely be one of the following;
- Rumours by Fleetwood Mac- the brutal honesty & in-your-face lyrics kill me.
- Wildflowers by Tom Petty, almost purely for the track “You Don’t Know How It Feels”. It’s the coolest laid-back ‘angsty’ song I think I’ve ever heard.
More recently, Hozier’s self titled album- killer tunes & sonically unique in a world of similar sounding pop music, which I LOVE.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Fleetwood Mac would definitely be at the top spot… I love Joni Mitchell, Sheryl Crow, U2, Elton John, Tracey Chapman, Tom Odell…
If you could collaborate with any artist who would it be and why?
I have to say, some of my best friends in music who I collaborate with here in Oz and the US are some of the most talented people I've ever heard. It blows my mind that the world doesn't know of them all yet! So I consider myself lucky in the collab department already. But that being said, if I could write with Stevie Nicks or Tom Petty, my life would pretty much be complete!
What style of music do you like to listen to and draw inspiration from?
I actually listen to a lot of acoustic singer/songwriters. I find the most inspiration from simple songs & artists with something to say. There is so much power and art in saying absolutely everything with just one line. I have to get a deep emotion, what ever that is, from music to feel connected to it.
What can you tell us about what you have planned for 2016?
I am DYING to get out on the road. I am hoping to tour overseas at some stage this year too. So travel and music- what’s not to love! One thing that you have not done but would like to... I’ve never been to Europe! So hopefully I can kill two birds with one stone & tour there!
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start a career in music?
You’ve got to truly love it. Every aspect of it. It’s not always bright lights & admiration- you’ve got to get through the low times with nothing but your pure love and passion for music.
