When the Victoria's Secret fashion show comes around, there is no doubt that we are in awe of each and every Angel that walks the runway. I mean, those bodies (ahhh-mazing!)
So we thought, who better to tell us "the secret" than Victoria's Secret trainer Justin Gelband! Trainer to some of the world most famous models including Kate Upton, Candice Swanepoel and Karlie Kloss, Justin has been dubbed the "model whisperer". Keeping the angels in shape all year round and getting them runway ready, every year, just in time for the highly anticipated Victoria's Secret fashion show!
Every year as we watch our favourite girls work the runway, we always have the same question, "How do they look so damn good?!"
We caught up with Justin to find out a bit out what he does and what it's like to train like an angel.
1. How many years have you been a trainer for and how did it all start for you?
I have been a trainer for 18 years! I started my career in 1998 when I moved to Los Angeles! I had been working for the Metrostars, a professional soccer team as an intern and realised it was time to make a change, so I moved to Los Angeles in 1997! I was recruited by two fitness advisors at 24-hour fitness who asked if would be a trainer! My response was maybe, only because I had wanted to train a specific type of individual and wanted my freedom to train as I saw fit!
There were 5 women that needed to lose over 50 pounds (about 23 kg) each with dress size of 16 to 24. These women were being humiliated by the other trainers because of their overwhelming regimen which asked them to do exercises not fit for their body types! Using my exercise expertise plus my knowledge in movement and functional training, I was able to help them attain their fitness goals! They lost 10/12 dress sizes over a year and I was now a sought after trainer for women in the business. During this time I was introduced to celebrity clients and later decided in the year 2000 to go it alone and the rest is history!
2. Could you share a bit about your fitness philosophy?
My fitness philosophy is based on each individual, their movement, motions, daily lifestyle, nutrition and cardiovascular activity! I was given a gift on how to notice movement patterns and how to take these movement patterns and incorporate them into a individuals program based on their goals and objectives! It's a very difficult and exhausting task for clients to try and get in shape especially when they struggle to find a program that works best for them, but this is my speciality and I've been lucky to work with the most sought after clients based on my education and knowledge of the body!
What people don't realise is that we are all created equal and at the end of the day it's not about who you are it's about where you are able to be in the next few months once you reach that stability with yourself and your mind to reach your goals and objectives. Health, Fitness and Wellness is a lifestyle and in order to create the best lifestyle for yourself you most focus on you and be the best that you can be with your own body!
3. Your typical day...
My days vary from 12 to 15 hours! I work around the clock 4 to 5 months a year where I start at between 6am and 8am and work till 7/9 pm! It's not an easy lifestyle and you must perform at your best at all times! Training isn't what people think it is, there is a philosophy and a methodology on how to pick what exercise and what type of program per bodytype, per individual and per lifestyle. This is what has separated me from the other individuals in my business. It's a unique technique that I have and my clients have always been able to achieve their best shape because of it!
4. How do you balance your hectic work schedule with staying fit, healthy and meeting your person goals?
In our business, you are in a customer service business so you are putting your clients and your work first and your workouts and lifestyle second! Since I teach and demonstrate most of my exercises daily I use this time to stay in shape! It's not easy to workout on top of a heavy workload but if you use your work time to workout you can stay in great shape!
5. Your top tips for general health and wellbeing...
Everybody is different so what good for one is not necessarily good for the next! 85 percent of what you do is what you eat" " Be the best that you can be with your own body. Incorporate Health Fitness and Wellness into your lifestyle in a way that best fits your lifestyle, not someone else's!
6. Favourite ‘between meals’ snack...
I always change between a vegan protein shake açaí bowl with almond butter or salad with meat but all is based on my BLOOD TYPE. DR D'Adamo is my friend and we have worked closely now for 10 years so all my nutrition is based on the BLOODTYPE Diet.
7. How important is mindset on your fitness journey?
The behavioural science bucket is the key to our success in the fitness world! EMPOWERING oneself to stay focused and have self-esteem in one's self to be at their best takes a lot of mind games and development! It's not easy to be at the top of your game all the time but if you stay in a relatively positive mindset all the time it will encourage you to stay on the right path throughout your journey!
8. How do you encourage your clients to stay motivated?
I live by the three Ms... Moderation, Motivation and Movement and these three Ms are the main focal point to the success of my clients and the individuals I teach!
Moderation: Please do things in moderation especially with food! No one Individual is perfect but it's the focal point to the success of someone who is all or nothing! To be at the top you must give yourself a chance to do things you enjoy so that having a burger, pizza ,fries ice cream, or a meal or your choice twice a week won't hold you back from being who you are and wanna be!
Motivation: comes from the mind and if you set out to achieve your goals and objectives by giving yourself leeway towards achieving those goals it makes it simpler to achieve! Staying motivated and in tune with yourself gives you the likelihood of you achieving those goals because your trusting yourself, believing and loving yourself for who you are!
Movement: is the key ingredient to the other two Ms because if you move everyday the other two and seem simple and easily attainable! We all need to move and we all need to move to feel confident that we are achieving the the standards we set out for ourselves! When we move we feel healthy, when we move we feel confident and when we move we feel energy and that's what makes our goals attainable.
